Pat Stewart is retiring in December. She has been our user accounts manager for many years, as well as being infamous as the Keeper of the Ton of Bricks and Explainer of Rules to wayward undergraduates. We've just advertised her job and we're hoping to find a replacement with enough time for a couple of months overlap. The job description below is actually a fair description of what Pat does - for once it isn't just the usual platitudes. She is a hard act to follow.

User Policy and Account Manager

The University Computing Service has a vacancy for a User Policy and Account Manager. The successful applicant will create, develop and maintain the policies relating to the management of accounts for the use of University Computing Service computing resources, ensuring an orderly and well managed environment for University members to carry out their studies and research.

The successful applicant will have a good degree or equivalent and a sound broad-based background in IT with considerable wide-ranging experience including support for a variety of operating systems. Experience of working in Higher Education and a working knowledge of legislation relating to IT would be expected. The applicant will have experience of managing staff, and must be able to communicate effectively with users at all levels in a variety of situations.

The applicant must have good interpersonal skills and able to act with discretion, empathy and tact. The applicant will need to be self-confident, motivated, well organised, meticulous, able to prioritise tasks when working under pressure, and have the ability to anticipate problems before they arise, and develop solutions to cope with them.

This is a permanent appointment at Grade 9, subject to a nine month satisfactory probation period, on a salary scale of £34,793 to £44,074 with initial salary depending on experience. The closing date for applications is Friday 5 September 2008. It is intended that interviews will be held during the week beginning 15 September 2008. Further details are available on the Computing Service web site.
