Chilled cider keeps swimmers warm

The water temperature has been increased by 10 degrees celsius
Heat produced by a Somerset cider factory chilling its drinks products is being used to keep a lido warm.

A system has been built to take recycled heat from the Brothers Drinks factory in Shepton Mallet to the town's outdoor swimming pool 30m away.

The heat is harnessed and warms the water as it passes through pipes before being returned to the pool.

The process has led to an increase in the temperature of the lido water of more than 10 degrees celcius.

"Not only does it help the council and taxpayers save money through heating bills, but it is also a very environmentally-friendly way of re-using excess heat," said councillor Ron Forrest of Mendip District Council.

The project is the latest part of a £500,000 improvement programme at Shepton's lido, which has already seen the installation of a new children's play area, green area and a revamp of the changing rooms and pool.
