Parody

Introduction

Shaving is ripe for parody. The lengths to which people will go to achieve a close, comfortable shave have inspired a variety of technologies through the ages, some of which are absurd by modern standards. Other devices and methods have been accepted as the norm, or even the zenith of technology (until the next cartridge "system" comes along). The Wall Street Journal cataloged both the design changes of razor blade systems and mentioned a few parodies in a 2008 article.[1]

List of Parodies

One list including many shaving spoofs can be found here.

Saturday Night Live (television)

  • Triple Trac: from the very first SNL episode, guest hosted by George Carlin. The fictitious advertisement offers a three-bladed cartridge (in 1975, two-blade cartridges were the very newest offering from Gillette). Punchline: "The Triple-Trac. Because you'll believe anything."

The Onion (newspaper/online)

  • F*** Everything, We're Doing Five Blades: (Warning, obviously NSFW language). Ostensibly by James M. Kilts, a former Gillette Chief Executive, this 2004 spoof foresaw the Fusion razor several years before it actually appeared on shelves. Notable quote: "Five blades, two strips, and make the second one lather. You heard me?the second strip lathers." Gillette/P&G has yet to implement the lathering strip.

MAD TV (television)

  • The Spishak Mach 20: Mocking the triple blade razors using hyperbole. YouTube link. Possibly related to a reported Russian/Soviet joke from the 1970s or 1980s, the punchline of which was "...the 24th blade polishes the jawbone."[2]
